Loop Rocks, from construction giant NCC is a truly innovative marketplace that transforms how the construction industry deals with secondary building materials such as surplus aggregates.

NCC came to us with a prototype for Loop Rocks, a service for smarter and more efficient management of secondary materials that encourage a circular economy. Using the app, construction workers can share material with each other and in that way save cost, time and the environment.

Using the Loop Rocks app for iOS or Android, construction sites in need of material can find and connect directly with sites with surplus materials, and then handle the transaction and transport as an integrated part of the service.

Loop Rocks was used as one of four cases at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo conference 2016, to showcase how to use the lean startup methodology to quickly build and test a service on the market. Loop Rocks has been mentioned in several media outlets such as ForbesNyTeknik, SvD and DI Digital.

Loop Rocks was a finalist for the World Economic Forum Digital Disruptor award in the Circular Economy category 2016, and winner in the CIO Awards 2016 as “The Sustainable Project of the Year” (Årets Hållbara Projekt).

Here at Shortcut, we had the pleasure of building the entire solution, including both the backend service and native mobile apps for both iOS and Android. We developed and completed the MVP (minimum viable product) in just 8 weeks, which was divided into four sprints. We released the app initially around midsummer 2016, and have developed the solution continuously since then. The iOS app is built in Objective C, the Android app with Java, and the backend in Python with the Django framework. The project has followed agile development principles, running two-week sprints.
